Vipassana Foundation and Dhamma Surabhi
In June 1982, BC was the site for the first Vipassana meditation course outside of India to be led by Assistant Teachers of S.N. Goenka. After the first course in 1982, courses were held regularly at rented sites, mainly church camps at White Rock and Shawnigan Lake. In August 1997 a 56-acre property was purchased just above the Coldwater River, near Merritt.
Vipassana Foundation was the name chosen when applying as an organization for charitable status back in 1982.
Dhamma Surabhi is the name given by Goenkaji for the Vipassana Meditation Centre of BC, which is a facility owned and operated by Vipassana Foundation.
The VF Trust is the Board of Directors of the Vipassana Foundation.
Trustees are appointed solely by the Centre/area teachers and usually serve for one or two years. Sometimes a member is reappointed at the end of the term. trustees are responsible for all aspects of the running and managing the center other than teaching courses.
Attending Trust Meetings
All old students are welcome to attend trust meetings. Attending a trust meeting is an excellent way to find out how Dhamma Surabhi really runs. You may find out who’s who for various projects, hear committee reports, give suggestions, or volunteer for a task. If you have new ideas or want to help, you can also contact the relevant committee.
