Old Student Courses

Short courses

There are 1 day and 3 day courses are for any student who has completed a 10-day course with S. N. Goenka and his assistant teachers. We encourage you to apply if it has been some time since your last course. One day courses are from 9am – 5pm, longer courses begin at 2-4 PM the first day and end by 7:30am or 5 PM the last day. Please review the Code of Discipline and then complete an application form.

Serve a Course

As an old student, you can now choose to serve on a course. To serve a ten-day course is a very special kind of service. We all find this an invaluable tool for strengthening our own practice as well as helping others get the Dhamma. And for those of us with less time available, even serving a portion of a course is a wonderful experience. Applications should be submitted ahead of time. Servers work long hours, but always sit at least three hours a day during group sittings and can usually attend the discourse. Rest is always taken between 1:00 and 2:30 pm. Instructions for cooking and all other tasks are very easy to follow.

Dhamma Service Periods

Dhamma Service periods are scheduled twice a year to focus on the repair, maintenance and up-keep of the center. Participants work together on different tasks which meet their skill level and interest. Along with giving Dhamma service, participants will meditate the three group sittings daily, have an opportunity to have interviews with assistant teachers and listen to special evening discourses. Students who have completed at least one 10-day course in this tradition are welcome to apply for any length of time during the period. To apply send in a Dhamma Service Application Form.

Satipatthana Sutta

Satipatthana Sutta courses have the same timetable and discipline as 10-day course. The difference is that in the taped evening discourses the Satipatthana Sutta is carefully examined. This is the principal text in which the technique of Vipassana is systematically explained . These courses are open to serious old students who have completed at least three 10-day courses, have not been practicing any other meditation techniques since last 10-day course, have been practicing this technique of Vipassana for at least one year, and who are trying to maintain the five Precepts in their daily lives. Please review the Code of Discipline and then complete an application form.

Long and Special

The Special 10-Day course, Long Courses of 20 days or more and the Teachers’ Self-Course are opportunities for deep, intensive practice of Vipassana meditation. To make proper use of them one must have full confidence in the technique and must feel a personal commitment to work exclusively under the guidance of S.N. Goenka and his assistant teachers. The search for a teacher and a path must be over; only then is it possible to go to the depths of this technique.

Sufficient experience in the practice is also necessary. For those who do not yet feel this confidence, who are not ready to make the necessary commitment, who are still giving a trial to the technique or who lack adequate meditation course experience it is better to join the program of 10-Day courses. Repeated 10-Day courses also offer the opportunity for serious meditation.

In the past, some meditators out of over-enthusiasm have tried to join courses for which they were not ready and found that they could not complete the course. Some with serious difficulties deliberately concealed them fearing that their applications would be rejected and the result was that their problems became more severe. Instead of deriving benefit from their course these people in fact harmed themselves.

Before applying, therefore, examine yourself honestly whether you are ready for a longer period of serious, diligent meditation. Each type of old student course has its own specific requirements which can be found on the application forms. Please read these requirements carefully prior to applying for this course.

The minimum requirements for attending a Special 10-day or 20 day course are:

  • Must be a serious old student who is committed to this technique.
  • Must have sat at least five 10-Day courses and one Satipatthana Sutta course with Goenkaji or one of his assistant teachers.
  • Practice this technique exclusively for at least 2 years.
  • Maintenance of daily practice of two hours per day for at least 2 years.
  • Abstaining from killing, sexual misconduct, intoxicants and keeping other precepts to the best of one’s ability for one year minimum.

The above are minimum requirements and not a guarantee of admission. The 20-day course is a requirement for the 30-day course. The 45-day course and the Teacher’s self-course require at least two courses of 30 days. Application for admission to each of the 10-Day Special Course, 20-Day Course, 30-Day Course, 45-Day Course, 60-Day Course and the Teacher’s Self-course must include a recommendation from an Assistant Teacher who knows you well and a Full Teacher from the student’s local area. Applicants who speak languages other than English may apply for this course; but acceptance will be decided by the teacher conducting the course.

A long course application, necessary for these courses, is available on the schedule page, or as a PDF. Applications must be submitted well in advance as processing may take some time.
